I have always used ‘found’ materials – they bring a history and authentic sense of place to a piece of work. They also bring a chance element that has to be worked with, their own colours, marks, and shapes giving an inherent dynamic to be accommodated.
Relocating to the coast in Cornwall has given me the opportunity to re-assess my output and to gather new imagery with a greater understanding of what marine art could be. The boats represent a personal freedom, escaping from regulation and scrutiny, they have individuality of design and allow association with elemental forces, the weather, which I can also incorporate into pictorial form.
